Tom Thaemert helped lead the Butler County Grizzlies to the State Championship in 1990. He was named "All-Region", "All-State" and "All-Conference" for his play during his freshman year. 1991, he helped lead the Grizzlies to a State Championship and a second place finish in regional play. He was named "All-American", "All-Region", "All-State" and "All-Conference" for his outstanding play as an outfielder his sophomore year.

In 1991, Tom played for the Wichita Broncos and in 1992 he was with the Elkhart Dusters. He helped lead Elkhart to a second place finish in the Jayhawk League and a berth in the NBC World Series. He led the Jayhawk League in steals (22) and was fifth in the league in total hits (42) and runs scored (25).

Tom completed his collegiate career at the University of Kentucky. He played only 11 games in 1992 because of an injury. In 1993, his senior year, he helped lead the Wildcats to a historic best 2nd place in the SEC Eastern Division. Tom was named to the "All SEC Tournament Team" as an outfielder. The Wildcats received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats had received only one invitation in the previous 40 years.
