Oral Taylor began his long baseball career in 1964 when he started umpiring junior and senior league games in the El Dorado City Recreation Program. In 1965,his workload increased as he umpired high school and some American Legion games. From 1966 to 1970, he umpired almost all of the El Dorado American Legion home games.
In 1971 Oral decided to coach the El Dorado American Legion team. After a winning season in 1971, his 1972 team won the 5th District Tournament and placed second in the state at Garden City.
Oral returned to umpiring for the next two years (1973-74). In 1975 he teamed with Brad Long to coach the El Dorado legion. He took over as coach of the team in 1976 and his 1977 team won the 5th District Tournament and played in the State Tournament.
Oral returned to umpiring in 1978 and continued for 17 years.
Oral Taylor became the first coach for Butler County Community College when they initiated their baseball program in 1978. He also coached during the 1979 season.
